Spring firing, just out of the kiln

Forty pieces came out of the March firing. When they're gone the next batch is six weeks away — we don't restock, we re-throw.

Our story

A converted dairy barn
and one very old kiln.

Wilder Goods started in 2016 as a wheel in the corner of a rented garage. It is now a wheel, four shelves and a gas kiln in a dairy barn off Sydenham Road, which is a promotion of sorts.

We make what we use — the mug that fits the hand you actually have, the bowl that holds an honest portion. Nothing here is decorative. If it chips, tell us and we'll replace it, because it means we got the clay body wrong.

How it's made

Six weeks, four pairs of hands short

  1. 01

    Wedging

    Twenty minutes of pushing air out of the clay. Skip it and the piece explodes in the kiln, taking its neighbours with it.

  2. 02

    Throwing

    Four minutes on the wheel if it goes well. Roughly one in six goes back in the bucket.

  3. 03

    Drying & trimming

    Ten days under plastic, slowly, then the foot is cut on the wheel and the maker's mark goes on.

  4. 04

    Bisque

    Eight hours to 1000°C, then two days cooling. Opening the kiln early is how you learn not to.

  5. 05

    Glazing

    Dipped by hand, three seconds. Wood ash from the studio stove gives the speckle — no two dips land the same.

  6. 06

    The big fire

    Fourteen hours to 1280°C. Whatever comes out is the batch. There is no second attempt at this stage.

The barn is open to anyone who wants to come and look at the shelves. Seconds table by the door — pieces with a glaze run or a warped rim, half price and perfectly good.
